Euros 2016: Golden Baby Swans!

The Russian junior team won team gold ahead of GB and Romania with a huge 4 point lead. I'm so proud! Just look at the happiness and let it fill you, because tomorrow might not go as well.

My baby swans started on their best apparatus, uneven bars, with hit routines.

Sima started off with a nice routine and hit her high double front half out dismount beautifully, she really struggled with it at nationals, so that was a win for her. Lena also did great with her nice lines and a high tkachev. Nastia went last with her high releases, I just love her routine. It's something really original for the Russians who live in the land of shap 1/2s and jaegers, and it gives me hope for the future. The current top bar workers have been stuck with the same skills and routines since London. Scratch that, even before London...

We didn't get to see much of beam, but everybody stayed on and scored okay, no falls! Which in itself is excellent news on beam, especially with juniors. Although I wouldn't blame you for counting ZubZub not making finals a tragedy. The international judges really don't like her :(

Everyone continued their good performances on floor. My favorite for this apparatus, Sima, also didn't make finals on her best piece. Ulya and Nastia performed cleanly and Lena topped the scores with her 14.100, the only Russian past 14 on floor. We can only hope that she won't still be the only Russian past 14 on floor tomorrow...

My swans finished their day on vault and I was mostly happy about them finishing, because things really started to go wrong there. Nastia performed a decent FTY securing her spot in the AA final, and Lena hit both of her vaults (DTY and 1.5 Y) impressively, qualifying first to vault finals. Her DTY has improved a lot from when she debuted it earlier this year, at least based on the blurry stream and good score of 14.700 (good score for a junior, I need Melka and Seda to step it up). But that's the end of good things on vault, because Sima sat down her first vault. She did hit her second vault, a FTY, but the damage for done and there were no vault finals for her. The last up on vault was Ulya, who balked on her first vault (DTY probably) at the last moment, touching the spring board and then running past the vault. It resulted in a zero, but at least it looked safe. She was probably rattled by that experience and ended up sitting down her second vault, yurchenko 1.5. I feel really bad for her, she could have easily medaled had she made finals.

The Russians actually qualified first to every final, and got the first two spots in all but one final (you guessed it, vault...). Lena and Nastia both got respectable AA scores of 56.732 and 56.049, respectively. Nastia also made UB and BB finals (qualified first to both). I'm not exactly a fan of her beam work, so this was something interesting. In addition to her first place in the AA final, Lena also qualified first to VT and FX finals, and second to BB final. Ulya shouldn't dwell too much on her bad luck on vault, because she has UB and FX finals to look forward to.

Oh, I almost forgot, vault wasn't the only disaster of the day. In the future, they might want to practice this :D

Let's also celebrate the success of Romanian juniors in light of the senior team's past struggles. Hopefully the team administration will change their bad habits and nurture these juniors so that they can reach their full potential as seniors. Good job for GB too. I'm sure their seniors will continue the medal streak and I wouldn't be surprised if they nabbed the top spot on the podium this time.

Some recordings of the livestream are HERE, rotation by rotation. The Russians, Romania and GB were all the the 4th subdivision.
